Speaking with the media at Scully Park on Tuesday, Tamou said he had identified a number of leaders in the squad - including Mbye, Alex Twal and Luke Brooks - but would gladly lead the side if Maguire thought he was the right choice.
"If Madge [Maguire] sees it that way, I'd happily put my hand up and happily lead the team," Tamou said.
Moses Mbye put forward Tamou's name as a potential successor after the Queenslander announced he would be standing down as captain after a two-year stint in the role.
Mbye further endorsed Tamou as captain material on Tuesday.
"I think James is a real leader of men," Mbye said.
"He's got a lot of experience, he's got State of Origin caps, he's got premiership rings, he's got international caps and I think you need someone who's had a lot of success to lead by example.
"I think he's a great candidate for that and there's a big team here of mentors and leaders who will decide who'll get the job."

The two players are in Tamworth as part of a week-long training camp at Scully Park.
Along with a range of community activities, the Tigers are putting in the hard yards on the field during their stay, Mbye said.
"The focus of a camp like this is just to narrow our focus on what we need to do. Get rid of some of the distractions that you do in day-to-day life, at home or whatever it is, and just to really build those connections or bonds with your peers and teammates," he said.
For Tamou, he's created bonds with the playing group in his short time at the club and wants the fans and his teammates to see the Tigers make the finals for the first time since 2011.
"Some of them really love the team, you can tell Alex Twal and Zane Musgrove - they love this team and I want to see them taste success," Tamou said.
"My goal...everyone's goal in the NRL is you want to make the top four. You're always given a chance to win the title if you're top four, that's how you want to think, how you have to think."
