For Bella Pollard, it included swimming in her grandparents' dam in a wetsuit during winter.
When pools closed due to COVID, it was the only way the swimmer could get some kilometres in.
So, the family put a lane rope across the dam and away Pollard went.
"I couldn't move my arms properly," the 14-year-old said of wearing the wetsuit.
She added: "I have a morbid fear of not knowing what's underneath me so I found it very hard because the dam is very murky. I did not open my eyes underwater once."

When you know Pollard's background, it's understandable why she plunged into the icy dam.
The Quirindi High student has always had an affinity with the water.
"She used to go off the diving board at Narrabri [where her family lived at the time] when she was about two, with a little back floatie on," Bella's mum, Sarah, said.
"She always loved the water. We had her in the water when she was three months old.
"She used to watch the kids train there [Narrabri] from a young age and she always wanted to try."
Pollard's passion for swimming then continued in Quirindi, before she linked up with 360 Scully Park Swimming Club so she could swim all year round.
Simon Andren - who has been coaching at the club for three years - has watched Pollard's focus sharpen as she hones in on her goals.
"She's willing to learn what she needs to put in. [You can see that] with Bella living in Quirindi and travelling for training. It's such a commitment," Andren said.
The dam swimming, along with her solo training sessions at the Quirindi pool of a morning, further highlight that commitment.
However, she admitted that her focus does slip at times - but she wants to improve.
"I forgot my swimmers last week and then I wasn't feeling well in the morning so I didn't bother swimming. I just need to be more focused and think 'Well, it doesn't matter if I'm not feeling well'. If I want my goal then I've got to suck it up," she said.
The immediate goal is to make a final at the NSW Senior State Age Championships, which start in Sydney on Sunday, and qualify for nationals.
Pollard will compete in the 14-year 100m butterfly, 200m butterfly and 200m backstroke. Her preferred stroke is butterfly and she is just a couple seconds off a national qualifying time in both the 100m and 200m events.
Pollard enjoys swimming at Sydney and is hoping to produce personal-best times at the championships.
"She tends to swim better [in Sydney], just having the competition there," her mum said.
