This is attested by Oxley High School Year 8 students, who have been drawn into the intrigue of the game this term.
While describing croquet as entertaining and relaxing, the girls say it's very well balanced out in strategy, critical thinking with a bit of competitiveness thrown in for good measure.
"There is a lot of thinking - it's a very strategical game," Sophie said.
They've made friendships, learned teamwork and the value of sportsmanship an a totally "brand new experience".
Tamworth Croquet Club has been coaching the girls as part of their school's sports program, and say they are "enthusiastic".
"With rapid improvement weekly this younger group could well be seeding future Australian champions," president Lyndall McKenzie said.
Ms McKenzie said croquet was not as passive as it sounds.
"Croquet can become a 'no holds barred' battle on grass as each team attempts to win more hoops than their opponent - but it is a very civilized game, a thinking game and a great deal of fun."

When asked if it was "just an old person's game" the girls' response was a loud, unanimous "NO!"
The girls thanked their teachers and the club for teaching them. With hot weather not conducive to playing next term, the girls were still keen to continue next year.
The Year 8s' tip is to always remember "there are no friends in croquet... unless you're on the same team".
