The 21-year-old couldn't be saved after he was rushed to Tamworth hospital with stab wounds.
A Green Street home has been cordoned off in Coledale as forensic police scour the scene where the stabbing occurred shortly before 1am on Saturday.
A 26-year-old woman was arrested and has been questioned by officers at Tamworth police station, but she's since been released as investigations continue. Police confirmed she is known to the victim.

Uniformed officers are guarding the front of the house and detectives have been coming and going, questioning witnesses.
Strike Force Mindoro has been setup by Oxley detectives to piece together the circumstances surrounding the stabbing, and what happened in the home after midnight.
Emergency services were alerted after a Triple Zero call for reports of a stabbing at the Green Street home, shortly before 1am.
Police arrived to find the 21-year-old man with stab wounds.
He was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics before he was rushed to Tamworth hospital, where he later died.
