Upper Hunter Shire Council confirmed the leak, which it said was suspected to be from a petrol station, and issued a no-fires warning to residents from the Kelly Street and Mount Street intersection to the Bill Rose Sports Complex.
"This is a precaution to minimise the risk of an out-of-control fire, coming in contact with the sewer lines," the council said.
"Please be assured that if there was an unacceptable risk, residents would have been evacuated."

Fire and Rescue NSW began monitoring the fuel gas levels on Thursday after crews were called to Aberdeen Street amid reports of a smell of fuel.
Police and the council closed surrounding streets and door-knocked residents, advising them to stay indoors.
The roads re-opened that night and the flushing effort began.
By Friday the fuel gas levels had dropped to a safe level, the council said, and fire authorities subsequently handed the responsibility to monitor, flush and ventilate back to the council.
The source of the leak is under investigation.
