McLean Care has implemented a restricted access to its Killean residential facility in Inverell due to an outbreak of Influenza A.

The service asking members of the community to refrain from visiting and accessing the facility at this time until further notice.
Residential services general manager Sarah Wade said influenza is spread easily, mainly through coughing and sneezing.

"We certainly don't want to alarm anyone, and wish to reassure families and the wider community that McLean Care has specific protocols in place to ensure our residents receive the highest level of care during this restricted period."
People with the flu can be infectious to others for the 24 hours before any symptoms start. Catching influenza is of grave concern for older people.
"If you are showing any flu-like symptoms or have been in contact with anyone who has you should be prudent when considering visiting any elderly relatives in their own home," she said.
Families of any infected residents have been contacted and McLean Care will maintain opening communication with them as to the health and wellbeing of their loved ones.

The flu is not the same as a common cold, and can be a serious illness.
For some people, such as young children, the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions, the flu can cause serious complications requiring hospitalisation and can sometimes lead to death.
