Starting at around 10am, eager juniors took the field playing one game every half hour for an action-packed day.
U8s, U10s and U12s played games, while U6s focused on skills. Inverell Junior Rugby Union president James Roger was impressed with the skill levels shown throughout the day.
The U12s had a great day and played really good games against Moree and Narrabri
- President, James Roger.
"None of our carnivals do official scoring but from our point of view the junior Highlanders U12s had a great day and played really good games against Moree and Narrabri which we were impressed with.
Teams travelled to Inverell from Narrabri, Moree, Tamworth, Walcha, Gunnedah and Armidale to play in the carnival.
Members from the senior Inverell Highlanders Rugby Club pitched in to help on the day by volunteering to referee.
Half way through the rugby season, coaches have an good understanding of their teams. Players new to the sport are also showing major improvements.
"As a club we are having a great year. Our registered players are up around the 120 mark which was our target for the year," Roger said.
Sometimes teams from Scone and Coonabarabran also participate in the carnivals, hosted by every town, but distance and prior commitments got in the way on Sunday.
Roger noted a number of key juniors were unable to play at the carnival due to representative trials.
"Nick Hilton, Jock Sides and Darcy Ryan were away trialling for the catholic diocese rugby side."
Hilton and Sides made the possibles and probables with Sides eventually being chosen for the team.
"It's such an amazing achievement."
Overall Roger said the day was a great success.
