On Monday the Tamworth Friendship Knitting Group donated the first of an ongoing donation of woolen blankets to the New England Fire and Rescue NSW crews.
The blankets are to travel on the tankers and vehicles to be given to victims of fire and motor vehicle accidents, which Superintendent Tom Cooper said cold make all the difference to someone "having one of the worst days of their life."
"We have blankets that are made for protecting firies from heat - they are tough and not very comfortable - and we have to take them back when we leave," he said.
"These blankets are made with love - it is a great initiative and will help hundreds of people having a terrible day begin their recovery."

The knitting group started as a celebration of Ane Burrows birthday, but quickly grew into so much more according to member Josie Coates.
"Not everyone knits, but we all donate wool, or time and chip in at one stage or another," Ms Coates said.
"It has become a real social club that has become all about love, friendship and knowledge.
"It has become as beneficial to us as it is to the recipients of the blankets."
To date the group has donated blankets to over 40 local organisations including the Children's Ward, Ronald McDonald House, Royal Far West and Nioka.
