The Jewry Street bridge feeds traffic in to one of the busiest intersections in the city.
Tamworth Regional Council expects to have the bridge duplication completed at some point this month, according to its website.
The bridge project was funded with a $3.5 million contribution from the federal government.
Once the bridge is finished, focus will shift to replacing the adjoining roundabout on Peel Street with traffic lights.
This phase is expected to be completed by late-2019.
"The bridge construction has been scheduled to ensure it is ready for use by the time the major upgrade to its main feeder roadway and adjoining intersection (Peel Street) is completed in late 2019," the project overview said on the council's website.
"Building the bridge before the connecting road is in use will mean there is minimal disruption to traffic."
