He is also known for criticising players for not being willing to travel “five minutes down the road” to play cricket.
No doubt about it, the lauded gloveman is a tough guy – it takes a lot to keep him off the field.
So when officials decided to abandoned the afternoon Twenty20 matches on day two of the Australian Country Cricket Championships at Shepparton on Friday, due to the mid-40 temperature, Groth was not impressed.
The Bush Blues were to have played South Australia, having won both their T20 clashes on day one of the championships on Thursday.
“Obviously we would have liked to have played – there’s no doubt about that,” Groth, the NSW captain, said.
“We were very keen to play, particularly playing South Australia. So we miss out on playing those guys.”

The match between NSW and South Australia was declared a draw, with the sides splitting the points.
NSW and Queensland, who beat South Australian by 30 runs on Friday morning, are the only teams with two wins.
The Bush Blues and Queensland meet in a T20 on Saturday morning, with the T20 final that afternoon.
NSW, the reigning national champions, also won the T20 tournament last year.
“We’ve had two really good wins, so that’s exciting,” Groth said. “There’s a good feel around the group.”
