- All works published in 1923, except for sound recordings, will enter the public domain in the United States – the first to do so since the 1998 Sonny Bono Copywright Term Extension Act passed.
- Nigerians will vote to choose their next president, so will Afghans.
- Emperor Akihito of Japan will abdicate his position, the first Japanese monarch to do so in two centuries.
- Eurovision 2019 will take place in Tel Aviv, Israel.
- The 2019 Cricket World Cup will be held in England and Wales.
- Climbing Uluru will be permanently banned.
- Transit of Mercury across the sun, visible as a small black dot moving across the sun takes place.
- A space telescope called CHEOPS will launch at the beginning of the year to study the formation of extra-solar planets.
