Tamworth flyer John Porch was in hot form for the Aussie men’s sevens side in South Africa scoring four tries in what was a mixed tournament for Tim Walsh’s side.
After blitzing their rivals on the first day, the Aussies went down to New Zealand 26-17 in their Cup quarter-final before suffering a 24-21 loss to England to finish outside the tournament’s top six.
Closer to home Pirates’ Miah O’Sullivan and Phoebe McLoughlin, and their NSW Blue side were crowned national youth women’s sevens champions.
The Blues beat inter-state rivals NSW White 12-10 in the final at Ballymore, McLoughlin’s boot proving the difference.
The final pitted her and O’Sullivan against McCarthy school-mate Jada Taylor, who scored the first of the White’s two tries.
The Blue were in scorching form over the three days, defeating Tasmania 65-nil, Victoria 50-5 and 40-nil, Queensland Grey 17-7 and Queensland Red 19-12 on their way to the title.
The White defeated the National Indigenous side containing Carinya’s Shanti Kennedy 39-5, before drawing 19-all with Queensland Red and 15-all with Western Australia.
They secured their place in the final with a 38-nil win over Queensland White.
