Mitch Smith stared his debut first-grade century in Tamworth in the eye, and blinked first: lbw for 96, as he combined with Tom Groth for a 156-run fourth-wicket partnership that propelled the reigning premiers to 297 on day one of the grand final replay against Old Boys at No.1 Oval.

In reply, Old Boys were 1-67 off five overs at stumps. Simon Norvill made a 16-ball 38 that included four fours and three sixes. He’s not playing next Saturday, apparently, so decided to maximise his time at the crease.
Smith – a Tamworth High teacher who is in his fourth season of Tamworth first grade, after relocating from Terrigal for a sea change – was decidedly more measured than fellow opener Norvill, facing 181 balls. It continued his major form reversal following a lean previous season.

In his last three innings, the opener has scored 83 not out, 48 and now 96, for a competition-best 241 runs in four innings at an average of 80.3. His previous highest score before this season was 51.
On Saturday, he was removed by youngster Landan Price, who debuted in first grade this season after joining Old Boys from North Tamworth.
While “a bit disappointed” not to get a ton, Smith is relishing his “weird turnaround” in form.
“But really, I’ve been cashing in on some not-so-great bowling,” he said. “But I’ll take it, because it’s runs I wasn’t able to get last year.”
“I’ve gone to opener [this season]. Maybe that’s helped me,” he added. “A fresh slate sort of thing … A little technique change. But I’ve still got to work on a few things.”
Smith described Groth’s 95-ball 110, which included 13 fours and three sixes, as “outstanding”. Groth, the Central North captain, scored 61 in his only other innings for Souths this season.
Old Boys veteran quick Troy Sands claimed 3-49 off 16 overs.
The two sides met in round one, in a one-day match, that finished in a tie – 152 runs apiece.
