High As Mike: Tamworth gets sneak peak of homegrown doco on medical cannabis

The feature-length documentary by the three local filmmakers follows the quest of Tamworth man Mike, as he tries to access medical cannabis to treat a brain tumour that is slowly making him blind.

Director Daniel Raffale hopes High As Mike, which is still in the process of being filmed, makes a wave across Australia that will change the nation’s medical cannabis laws.

"We’re trying to make it easier for everyone,” he said.

“The fact that it's legal to get medicinal cannabis doesn’t mean anything, because it’s just so hard to get.

“It frustrates people, and that’s what we want, we want people to have the shits, we want people to yell at the screen.

“We try to tell stories that are local, that will go global. That’s why we started this thing.”

A 12-minute preview of the documentary will be shown in a free screening, that will also act as a fundraiser, at Tamworth’s Forum Six Cinemas on Wednesday night at 7pm.

Mr Raffale hopes Tamworth, as the “ground zero” of the medical cannabis movement of Australia, rallies around the film.

“People can donate $5 or $5000, or they don’t have to donate anything, we’re just happy for them to come along and see what we're doing,” he said.

Local medical cannabis advocate Lucy Halsam will speak before the screening.

The documentary, which started filming in February, is expected to be released next March, at Mrs Haslam’s United in Compassion forum on the Gold Coast.
