Wade Maloney, a 27-year-old research agronomist, was travelling with friends when he was killed crossing a busy highway in Texas.
A much-loved player with the Narrabri Blue Boars, Mr Maloney is being remembered as a talented young footballer and the team’s try hero.
He attended Oxley High School in Tamworth and St Albert’s College at the University of New England in Armidale.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman told The Leader the family was being helped by consular officials.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who died in the US, in accordance with the Consular Services Charter,” the spokeswoman said.
“For privacy reasons we are unable to provide further details.”
It’s understood Mr Maloney was raised in Tamworth, where his family still lives, but had been living and working in Narrabri.
He last took the field for the Blue Boars in recent months, before heading overseas.
