It was a game of two halves with Waratahs dominating the first half and leading 2-nil at the break, and Olympians controlling the second.
“We probably didn’t throw much at them in the first half and they didn’t throw much at us in the second half,” Olympians coach Andrew Farmilo said.
“They scored in the first 30 seconds. That probably got our heads down a little bit and that allowed them to control the game.”
He felt the turnaround came from their attitude more than anything. They didn’t really change their tactics.
“We just spoke at half-time about controlling the ball more and being confident.
“We put them under early pressure and scored a goal, and then that belief starts to come back,” he said.
He was really happy with the way they possessed the ball in the second half.
They went forward with purpose.
“We just didn’t try and go forward, we looked for the opportunity to go forward,” he said.
Em Chaffey scored both Olympians goals.
Farmilo said there was still plenty of time for either side to snatch the points when she slotted the second.
He thought Ash Chaffey and Holly Littlejohns were fantastic for them, while Dana Constable and Kate Reynolds were “their usual selves” meaning strong at the back.
.It was though probably Constable’s last game for them.
She will be a big loss.
“She’s been unbelievable,” Farmilo said.
It was Waratahs’ second consecutive draw.
“The first half was really really good, we controlled the ball well and moved the ball out of back well,” coach Josh Worpel said.
“We got players moving forward and when we had our chances we took them.”
“The second half we fell right away from that.
“We started turning over way too much ball and they hurt us from that.”
Pushing back into the midfield Worpel said Tahlia Rekunow was good at inner.
“I thought our backs were pretty good again Tayla (King) and Hayley (Lennon),” he said.
They (Waratahs) had to do a lot of scrambling.
Barrie Pritchard meanwhile was greeted with a win as he made his return to the Flames coaching ranks after a six-week holiday in Europe.
Flames went up 3-0 before withstanding an eight-minute onslaught from Tudors to close out the three-goal win.
Kim Resch scored at the 21-minute mark before Flames doubled up 10 minutes later.
The team goal – which involved Resch, Naomi Spark and Jess Fleury – ended when Spark smashed her shot home.
Resch then doubled up 10 minutes into the second half before Tudors searched for a goal.
“Tudors had a number of penalty corners over an eight-minute period but we managed to hold them out and hung on for a 3-0 win,” Pritchard said.
He said Resch was dangerous
“The midfield, which is our strength, of Kim, Naomi Spark and Kate Ferguson – they were pretty strong through the middle,” he said,
“Kate Mackay played left half, she filled in there, and had an excellent game. Not much got past her”
“Ash Allen in defence had a pretty good game too.”
