Joe Mutch, Brock Peters and Joshua Cripps are the faces behind Peel’s first ever Rocket League team, and after an almost faultless qualifying tournament last weekend are hot favourites to make a mark at the inaugural National Championships.
Last weekend the trio took on 32 other school teams in a tournament, only dropping one game in the final best of five series to win a spot at the finals, which include free flights and accommodation.
The game uses physics to combine cars and soccer, although for these boys it is just outright fun.
“A friend introduced me to the game about two years ago, and then I found out that these two played as well so we just started playing together,” Brock said.
“It is really addictive, and you can watch yourself improve so it is really rewarding to score goals as well.”
E-Sports is the future of spectator sport as well in some circles, with the first ever Rocket League World Championships last month in London played out in front of over 200,000 viewers.
While the Tamworth trio aren’t quite at that level yet, they are not short on confidence heading to Adelaide.
“We didn’t expect to win the first of four qualifying tournaments, although we had confidence that we would qualify,” Brock said.
“After winning that the way we did I am confident we can win the whole thing.”
