Tamworth No.1 Oval will play host to a junior AFL gala day this Sunday.
Matches will be played across under 14s, under 17s and youth girls age groups with teams from Moree, Inverell, Armidale, Tamworth and Farrer attending.
AFL North West president Josh McKenzie said the gala day was a chance for players – both new and old the game – to come down.

“The junior game in the region has seen magnificent growth in the past three years, exhibited in Tamworth on the long weekend when four junior representative teams took on the AFL North Coast,” McKenzie said.
“Our gala days are our chance to give players who want to experience AFL the opportunity locally without the need to make a regular commitment. If you are interested, come down and have a go.”
Tamworth Roosters coach Greg Vallender said the day was “massive” for the kids, especially the younger ones and the girls.
At the moment a lot of junior girls play up in the senior women’s competition while boys as young as 12 play in the under 17s.
“A gala day allows us to be a bit more flexible and let kids play other kids closer to their own age,” Vallender said.
“It also allows the bigger kids to go full noise without worrying about the little kids.
“The stand of footy rises in all grades.”
Games start at 10am but new players are asked to arrive at 9.30am for registration. No cost is involved for those who come along for the day to check things out.
Players must be older than 10 and up to under 17s age as of January 1, 2018 to play.
