Offences such as speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile while driving and not wearing a helmet will see motorists cop a harsher penalty, under the police operation.
Police have warned drivers can lose their licence in one go if they are caught doing the wrong thing.
Oxley Police Inspector Michael Wurth told The Namoi Valley Independent travellers should prepare themselves fully before getting on the road.
“There are some really simple things people can do before taking a trip such as, ensuring their car is prepared and ready for the trip,” Inspector Wurth said.
“It’s also advisable not to set off for a long trip first thing in the morning or straight after work, that’s where fatigue can play a part.
“By taking off during the day it ensures that the driver is well rested and fatigue is less likely to be a factor.”
The Inspector said police would be targeting all dangerous behaviours on our roads.
“Unfortunately the Oxley district has one of the highest levels of road trauma in the state this year,” he said.
“We have seen success in our recent road safety campaign Operation Merritt and we will be looking to carry on that good work over the long weekend.
“So we will be out in force this long weekend targeting dangerous behaviour to ensure everyone has a safe long weekend."

Residents in the region’s villages have also been put on notice that police will be regularly patrolling the entire region.
“We wont just be focusing on the larger towns and areas but we will be in the smaller villages as well,” Inspector Wurth said.
“Police will be out in full force across our region both in the form of local patrol cars and highway patrol vehicles ensuring everyone is doing the right thing across the weekend.”
Double demerits will be in force from midnight on Thursday until midnight on Monday.
