WITH automated external defibrillators (AED) set to begin popping up in several local businesses throughout the region, locals are getting there chance to learn how to use the equipment.

The training will come from Liverpool Plains Shire Council (LPSC) as a part of council’s initiative and investment in providing defibrillators at strategic locations, in its workplaces and the wider community.
To help move the program along, LPSC has purchased a training defibrillator which will help staff become proficient in using the technology and will become available for any community groups or businesses that wish to hold training sessions.
LPSC work, health, safety and risk advisor, Noel O’Brien said having an AED could mean the difference between life and death.
“Without early defibrillation with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator), less than five per cent of cardiac victims survive, in fact for every minute that passes, the chance of survival reduces by 10 per cent,” Mr O’Brien said.
“Defibrillation within the first few minutes of having a sudden cardiac arrest, increases the chance of survival, to over 70 per cent.
“These are Life Saving Devices, they can used by anybody and you don’t require First Aid qualifications to successfully apply these machines.
“They are easy to use, maintain, and can save a life prior to the ambulance arriving.”

LPSC mayor Andrew Hope said having the equipment on hand was very important and praised the efforts of Rotary Quirindi for its efforts bringing the equipment to the shire.
“Rotary Quirindi are in the process of installing approximately 15 new defibrillator units throughout the region, including Blackville, Werris Creek, Spring Ridge, Currabubula, Willow Tree and Quirindi,” Cr Hope said.
“These are in addition to the five units that have already been installed at Carlos IGA, Quirindi RSL, Yogi’s Store, Tamarang Service Centre, Quirindi Newsagency and the Quirindi Gun Club.”
“Training in the use of the defibrillators has also been included for all locations as a part of the project.
