As Tamworth Jockey Club track manager, he is preparing for TJC’s biggest day of the year – the Sunday April 29 Mercure Tamworth Cup meeting.
He is also overseeing Group 4’s ladies league tag and men’s under-23 sides, who play in the divisional trials at Scone on April 21.
Bowne co-coached the Werris Creek Magpies with Ron Dellar the past two years but thought it was time to have a rest from that.
“They’ve got [former Newcastle Knight] Matty Parsons to co-coach with Ronnie [this season],” he said, adding that he expected the side to perform well after moving up to first grade under the revamp.
“I had three seasons down with Ronnie, got to a couple of grand finals – won one and lost one,” he said.
While he stepped back from the coaching role, he is on Group 4’s board under chairman Ray McCoy.
“They put me in charge of the rep sides,” he said.
“We appointed Paul Hyson and Damien Allan as the [under-23 and league tag] coaches and they are doing a good job. Nathan Blacklock is also helping Paul with the under-23s too. Damo is very happy with his squad too.”
Bowne said the lack of rain had been somewhat of a concern ahead of the Tamworth Cu[ meeting.
But he added: “It’s all looking good. It’s going to be a huge day with more than $400,000 in prizemoney.
“So we want to have the track as good as we possibly can. The track played pretty well at the meeting last week too. [They] ran some good times, and winners came from in front and behind. Mark Mason’s filly finished pretty well too.”
The Group 4 under-23 squad: Dylan Lake, Jake Simpson, Mitch Sheridan, Jack Rumsby, Blake Cameron, Ryley Taylor, Scott Berry, Harrison Buhler, Ryan Ingram, Brady Barwick, Sam Molynewux, Jack Patterson, Fraser Evans, Lochie Collins, Zack Leonard, Matt Gillham, Mitch Doring, Hayden Inglis-Smith, Ethan Colins, Jemmarley Jerrard, Antony Reid.
