CONGRATULATIONS to Mitchell and Austin Scrivener who are members of the NSW U/21 wood-chopping team that won the three-day relay event over the Easter long weekend. They competed against Tasmania, Queensland and Victoria. Each team consisted of seven members going at it. Austin is the youngest member to be selected for NSW while Mitch represented the state U/21s for the last time due to his age.

INDIVIDUALLY Austin won a Junior Development chop and the Encouragement Award for the junior Tree Felling Competition, demonstrating special skills and potential during competition at the 2018 Sydney Royal. Mitch made four finals including the Father and Son event and picked up third place with his father Alan against 38 other teams. Great effort boys.

ALTHOUGH they didn’t make it to the podium this year the Walcha Central School mixed relay team swam well at NSW Swimming Championships earlier in the week. Both Chloe Mackaway (29.25 seconds) and Thomas Micallef (29.88) went under the 30 second mark while Murdoc Chawner (30.58) and Abbey Mackaway (33.66) assisted the team to slice five seconds off their qualifying time. For the record Warren won the event from Coleambally and Norfolk Island.
INDIVIDUALLY at the state titles, Chloe stopped the clock in 29.88 seconds in her 50 metre freestyle event to finish 16th overall while younger sister Abbey smashed her 100 metre breastroke PB by nearly five seconds to place 23rd overall in a time of 2 minutes 11.72 seconds.
IT CERTAINLY has been a swimming season to remember for Chloe who not only represented North West again at the NSW Championships, she also broke or equalled no less than 19 “Walcha World Records” here at home with the Flippers. Good on ya “Nigel”.
THE Walcha Rams hit the ground running when they towelled up the Narrabri Boars last Saturday at John Oxley Sportsground by around half a ton. The Reggies didn’t fare quite so well when they went down to the visitors but get another chance on Saturday, this time against the HIghlanders at Inverell.
THE Walcha Roos didn’t get off to an ideal start against Uralla last Friday night at Woodville Oval but tried a lot harder than the final score indicated. There were some new faces in the squad and it may take a bit of time for the boys to gel. The bottom line is they were out there having a go and didn’t throw the towel in despite the score.
THE Jillaroos also have some new faces in their squad including Walcha News sports journalist Ellen Dunger who regularly writes the back page story. Amy Withers has returned to the Jillaroos this season while Mollie Martin, Marissa Sheelah and Kathryn Gollan are also pulling on the green and gold guernseys in 2018. Welcome aboard girls.
CONGRATULATIONS to Walcha veteran Golfer Warwick Hogan who won the Jock Nivison Shield, which is awarded to the player who accumulates the most stableford points throughout the Vets Pennants season. This Sunday “Ben” will captain the “Mollydookers” when they take on the right-handers in their annual grudge match.
