The program, based off the highly successful Armidale model, will launch in the next few months off the back of the Container Deposit Scheme, and aims to keep local youths out of the prison system and in the community through hands-on education, training, and eventually employment.
After hearing of Challenge’s proposal to launch the program in Tamworth, owner of Parry Logistics, Greg Parry, contacted Challenge CEO with a proposal of his own.
“I read about the program in The Leader a few weeks ago, and had heard about the success of the Armidale program, so offered to throw in $10 for every tonne of recycling that Challenge process,” Mr Parry said.

Challenge will earn 10c for every container they process through the CDS, expecting to earn near $400,000 a year, which will all go to the BackTrack program.
“I certainly think a program like this is necessary in Tamworth, particularly at the moment,” Mr Parry said.
“I would like to see other companies get on board and chip in as well.”
As fate would have it that very same week that Mr Parry extended the offer, he caught two young boys “all of about ten years old stealing out of the back of one of our utes in the yard.”
“We need something to get young boys like that back on track. If they are doing this when they are 10, God knows what they will be doing at 16.”

Mr Murphy was more than happy to accept the extra financial support, which both parties estimate will be between $3000 and $3500 a year, claiming that Parry are hopefully the first of several local businesses that will offer support in one way or another.
“It is great to see Parry Logistics come on board and support the BackTrack program. It would be fantastic if other Tamworth businesses are also able to donate,” he said.
“By Tamworth businesses supporting the backtrack program in this way, along with the Tamworth communities support by leaving their refundable containers in the yellow bins as they have done so previously, the total additional revenue from this will enable this very important project to proceed without the usual scratching around for cash to keep the program alive.”
