Mark Rodda said the New England Highway, between Calala Ln and Greg Norman Dr, was “an absolute goat track” and feared it wouldn’t be long before there was a “significant accident” on the road.
“All of the approaches to Tamworth, Manilla Rd, Oxley Highway and Gunnedah Rd are in good shape, but the busiest route is a goat track,” Cr Rodda said.
“It’s embarrassing for people who live here and dangerous for people using it.
“It’s single lane both ways and it’s falling apart at the sides.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to wake up and read about a significant accident there.”
The councillor said a number of residents living on streets off the highway have made representations about the stretch of road who have said it’s “poorly-lit” and avoid using it at night.
Cr Rodda said there had to be more thought about the future with regards to the southern side of the city which he said was a growing area.
“We have to think more about the future, that’s where our sporting centre’s going and it’s an area that’s growing,” he said.
He also said the road was also unsafe for cyclists who regularly pedal along the route.
The stretch of road which has riled Cr Rodda comes under the state government’s jurisdiction and the Tamworth councillor wants to see some more infrastructure spending splashed outside Sydney.
“There’s billions spent in metropolitan NSW, but we’re asking for basic infrastructure,” he said.
“There’s $2.3 billion to rebuild stadiums in Sydney where usage is unlikely to be increased.
Cr Rodda said investing in upgrading the troublesome stretch of highway would “enhance and protect lives”.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson the New England Highway upgrade is “next on the list” and has already had discussed the project with Roads and Maritime Services and Tamworth Regional Council, but couldn’t put a timeline on any work.
