The Grafton trainer has only had Belflyer for his last three starts.
In that time the gelding has turned his form around to produce two wins and a second.
“I watched a few of his replays and he used to get back a long way. For some reason, he’s taking up a really nice spot and going really good,” Shelton said.
At Moree on Sunday, the well-backed Mishani Stealth emerged as the one to beat after the turn.
Mishani Stealth took the lead but Belflyer, who had settled midfield on the fence, zoomed through the traffic to track the leader down and nail the win.
Jockey Ben Looker produced a gem of a ride with Shelton saying the hoop rode Belflyer “down to the letter”.
“He done a really good job. It was a good ride and he’s a good little horse,” Shelton said after the win.
