The facility has had a history of non-compliance regarding its waste discharge since the operation began, according to a report to be considered at tonight’s Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) meeting.
A recently-revised agreement between council and Baiada required the chicken processor make “substantial progress toward waste compliance” by January 30, 2017.
Baiada has asked for an extension on its waste improvement plan period until May 30.
Approval will depend on a vote by councillors at tonight’s ordinary meeting.
Recent testing recorded levels of nitrogen and ammonia two to five times higher than the trade waste approval limits in Baiada’s waste, according to the report before council.
Any commercial operator who wishes to discharge non-residential wastewater into the sewer must enter a Trade Waste Agreement with council.
According to council, Baiada has been paying an average of $4000 per week since July 2016, for non-compliance charges.
More to come.
