The Quirindi product, who will lead the Brumbies on to Canberra Stadium for the first time on Saturday night, has committed to a two-year extension with the ARU and the Brumbies that will take him through to the end of 2019.
The 27-year old has worn Wallaby gold 13 times since debutting against France in 2014, but last featured in the test arena in the series against England last year.
He made his Brumbies debut in 2011 and has been capped 80 times for the franchise, this season stepping up to co-captain them alongside Christian Lealiifano.
“I am delighted to commit to the Brumbies,” Carter said.
“I am looking forward to helping the club prosper this season and in the years to come.
“We have an exciting team here at the Brumbies with an excellent blend of experienced heads alongside some top-quality youngsters and I am excited to be part of the continuing success of the club.”
“The Brumbies are very special to me and have been a major part of my rugby career and it’s great to be able to be settled and in an environment I know very well.
“There are lots of positive vibes around the club and I am looking forward to playing my part.”
He admitted the 2019 World Cup was a lure to continuing to ply his trade in Australia.
“Playing for the Wallabies was also a major motivator to re-sign and I’m excited at the prospect of pulling on the gold jersey again and pushing hard to earn a spot at the World Cup in 2019," he said.
Brumbies head Coach Stephen Larkham was effusive in his praise of the second-rower.
“Sam’s re-signing sends out a positive message throughout the club,” Larkham said.
“He is a well-respected individual within the playing group and leads from the front. His performances are consistently good and we are very pleased that he has extended his stay at the Brumbies.
“As captain of the side Sam brings a great deal of knowledge and experience of the game to the role. He has been a mainstay at the Brumbies for a few years now and it’s exciting to see that he will be there showcasing his skills in Brumbies colours until 2019.”
Wallabies coach Michael Cheika commented on the great character Carter showed in how hard he worked on the training field last season.
"For Sam to knock back overseas offers and stay in Australia also shows how seriously he’s taking his new role as captain at the Brumbies and that he’s not a one-and-out type of guy,” Cheika said.
