Extra-time drama on court

Wednesday’s game between the McCarthy Emeralds and the Oxley Rebels at the Sports Dome was delayed by the exciting conclusion to the McCarthy Mavericks and Calrossy Lionhearts match.

The boys were deadlocked 37-all at the final buzzer, forcing the game into five minutes extra time.

However, both defences held firm and only conceded two points each, with the 39-39 score forcing a second extra time of five minutes onto the thriller.

In the second extra period shooters from both sides had the scoreboard ticking over as both McCarthy and Calrossy pushed each other in a spirited display, with the final result not being settled until the final seconds.

Calrossy eventually came away with the points beating McCarthy 46-44 in a classic nail-biter with both teams leaving nothing on the court and pushing their bodies to the limit.

The girls late start to their match certainly didn’t dampen their enthusiasm.

The McCarthy Emeralds took the early initiative, but it wasn’t long before the Oxley Rebels found their range.

Both teams revealed a strong passing game and the score see-sawed with little between the two sides until Oxley started pulling ahead in the last quarter of the half.

A three pointer by McCarthy’s Josie Chick closed the gap to 31-30, Oxley rapidly changed this to 33-30 then brought it home with another two points as the buzzer sounded, finishing the half at 35-30.

The Emeralds came out strongly in the second half and the score evened up at 37-all in the 14th minute.

McCarthy broke the deadlock but the Rebels didn’t let them have the lead for long, levelling the score soon after.

The to-ing and fro-ing started again and neither side let the other keep the lead for long until McCarthy nudged ahead in the closing minutes.

Oxley battled to the end but the Emeralds were able to keep their lead to finish on top 57-54.
