The four-year-old bay gelding rushed home to overpower Colt Prosser’s Stop The Fight and a second career win at his 11th start.
“Someone came to me and asked me why he was shortening,” Davies said of a gelding son of Eavesdropper who had been a $26 but plummeted to odds of about $8 with on-course bookies.
“I said I don’t know why.”
He said his gelding had been the victim of wet tracks at recent starts.
“But I don’t know why he handled it today (Heavy 8). He won his maiden at Walcha on a good track.”
The Tamworth trainer then celebrated a race to race double when Darren Jones sooled Rubymay home and win the Moree Tyrepower Benchmark 65 Handicap (1200m). It was the six-year-old mare’s fourth race win after finishing a 10 length 10th at Narromine at her previous start.
“You can forget her last start at Narromine, it was an absolute glue pot,” Davies said.
“Her start before that she was fourth in Sydney and went to the line hard held. It’s good to see her back.”
Davies has her booked in to Nicconi this season but may continue to race even if she is in foal.
His double eventually earned him the Moree Race Club’s $1000 trainers bonus. It was a $10,000 bonus for a trainer who could win the Cup (won by Dark Mojo) as well as two other races.
Davies had the other two races covered but didn’t have a Cup runner although the secondary $1000 bonus “came in handy” when he prevailed in the points system tally.
Davies also has a number of his stable nominated at Armidale and Collarenebri meetings this Saturday.
While Collarenebri is in some doubt due to the condition of its track after recent heavy rain Armidale is in “good nick” advised AJC secretary Jim Dedes.
“It’s still a bit wet but we’ve just come out of the wettest June and August we’ve had for a long while,” Dedes said.
