The Armidale GP presented an open letter, which was signed by 50 local and statewide health professionals, and called on the candidates to act as a matter of urgency.
“It frustrates me immensely to see Australia ignoring the opportunities in renewable industry,” Dr Knirsch said.
“By resisting change, Australia will be left behind instead of becoming a leading country in environmentally-friendly industries of the future.”
The open letter detailed links between air pollution and long-term ill-health and said it led to more premature deaths in Australia than the national road toll.
“A growing number of people in New England and all over Australia want politicians to act now on this very important issue,” Dr Knirsch said.
