The Inverell-based Joeys FC scored a 3-1 victory in second grade to start their day well before first grade upset Tamworth FC 4-2.
“It was unexpected, a good surprise for us,” said Joeys’ Darren Halliday.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a win down here.”
Let alone both grades.
Yet the Joeys deserved their win, leading 3-nil at half time before Tamworth FC fought back with goals from Kurt Barrow and Travis Baird.
“Then we missed an open goal and they ran the length of the field to score,” said Tamworth FC’s Greg Bartlett.
“That took the wind out of our sails.”
Geoff Miller, Mike Cashel, Hamish Mingeli and Cameron Gasson all scored for Joeys.
At Carter Street in Tamworth the Oxley Vale Attunga Mushies and South Armidale Scorpions played out a 2-all draw.
Dan Cannon scored a first minute goal for OVA against his old club but the Scorpions equalised through a controversial penalty before the break.
Jamie Wright then gave the Scorpions a 2-1 lad in the 60th minute.
Mushies exerted plenty of pressure on the visitors before Adam Watson’s header ricocheted off the cross bar to Benn Genardini for the Mushie striker to notch the equaliser.
Adam Watson, and Lachlan Browne worked tirelessly together in the midfield while young Will Menz and Jack Diebold continue to improve.
It was also a draw in Armidale between North Companions and the home side North Armidale United when they finished 1-all but Demon Knights and East Armidale enjoyed big wins, DK beating Moree FC 5-nil and East Armidale accounting for winless Namoi United 6-nil.
