For the first time in Tamworth, The Smith Family has joined forces with The Loft Art Studio to deliver the SmArts program to students in years 8 to 10.
SmArts is a hands-on program to encourage students to recognise their potential to study arts/design at university, and work in arts professions and trades.
All participating students are supported through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which provides them with financial support for educational basics, as well as the support of learning and mentoring programs to help them succeed at school.
Since the workshop started on Monday, participating students have been exploring a range of elements including painting, still- life drawing, sculpture and life drawing using different mediums such as paints, charcoal, pastels, and pencils.
Over the five days, students will learn different techniques, visit local galleries and learn from other local exhibiting artists.
Tomorrow, the students will display their artwork to friends and family at the studio.
Cindy Pearce, The Smith Family’s program co-ordinator, said the rich creative experience of SmArts would have many benefits for these young people.
“Giving students the opportunity to develop their skills in arts with a local artist is a powerful way to help them explore their artistic interests, increase their confidence, and lift their aspirations,” Ms Pearce said.
