On a concrete background, a large sand goanna, a totem of local Indigenous people, weaves its way around the courtyard.
The mural was designed by Joe Moore, and Tamworth High School teacher Miles Cantwell was the project manager.
Art students from years 9 to 12 at Tamworth High, represented by Jaydifah Boney, Georgia Taggart and Georgina Martin, created the wonderful goanna.
A most practical and beautiful feature of the space is the mosaic bench, the work of artists Joanne Stead, Karen Balsar, Emma Stilts, Jodie Herden and Leah Dryden, helped by young people who drop into The Youthie.
The imagery of the bench and its design flows from the mural, providing a connection between the past and the present.
Part of Tamworth Regional Council’s Eyes on Art strategy, the space was opened by Cr Juanita Wilson, fittingly, on the first day of National Youth Week.
