Oxley Police Superintendent Clint Pheeney and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson agreed Mr Sutherland would have a valuable contribution as the taskforce looks to get the message straight for the region’s kids regarding ice.
Youth service assistant with Tamworth Regional Council and youth co-ordinator at The Youthie, Mr Sutherland has been a prominent worker for Tamworth’s youth for a number of years.
Mr Sutherland said The Youthie could play an important role in battling ice in Tamworth and listed one benefit as allowing the children to control the level of support they get.
“Sometimes it is clinical support and sometimes it is just positive mentoring, just a friend in a safe space,” he said.
Mr Sutherland also said the variety of personnel available at The Youthie was another strength.
“We have a variety of youth workers with different levels of experience,” he said.
“Some are older and more experienced, and there are younger youth workers who can really relate to the time and place that young people are in.”
Local member Kevin Anderson spoke highly of Mr Sutherland and said he had a great ability to connect with people and get the message across.
Superintendent Pheeney said he would be a very important person to talk to.
