NATIONALS leader Warren Truss has announced his retirement from federal parliament and Barnaby Joyce is expected to be elected the new leader at a meeting in Canberra tonight.

Mr Truss is the member for Wide Bay in Queensland and was first elected in 1990.
He has led The Nationals since December 2007.
Mr Truss will step down at the next election.
