Starstruck kids and benevolent parents and grandparents were among the crowd when mayor Col Murray turned on the lights for the traditional festive switch to the Christmas parade in Peel St on Monday night.
The ceremonial event included performances from the local highland pipe band and the RSL brass band, a barbecue, some children’s entertainment like face painting – and the special appearance of the most popular man of the moment, Santa.
The six-metre-tall tree is outside the council headquarters at Ray Walsh House and will be lit up right through December.
