Mason won at Townsville last weekend and was the only cowboy to cover three bulls on Saturday night.
In the final chapter of this year’s PBR Australian Series a huge crowd cheered on the local boys.
Uralla’s Chris Lowe and SIngleton’s Cody Heffernan also made the final eight but couldn’t match their NSW compatriot who is in a purple patch of riding.
With a 259.5 total on three bulls, Mason was mid field with an 84 point ride in the first round. 87.5 in round 2 then marked 88 points aboard Delta 32 in the Championship Round to secure the win in the event.
The competition started with a field of 20 riders and was reduced to eight after two rounds.
Overall 12 bull riders would make the whistle in the first round with young Cody Heffernan from Singleton NSW leading the round with an 87.5 point ride aboard Disco Duck and 2013 Australian Champion a close second with 87 points aboard West Texas Crude.
Round two would see the bulls have the majority of wins with only seven bull riders making the eight second whistle. Even though the USA’s Matt Triplett bucked off his first bull he made up for on it on his second with an 88 point ride aboard Lite Em Up, enough to secure him a spot in the championship round.
Only three bull riders would qualify back to the final round on three bulls, Lachlan Richardson on 172, Dave Mason on 171.5 and Ryan Storey on 163. Others to make it back were Guy Ford, Cody Heffernan, Fraser Babbington, Chris Lowe and Matt Triplett.
Triplett would be the first to make the whistle in the final, marking the highest score of the event with an 89.5 point ride aboard Hempenstall’s, Blossom, giving him a total of 177.5.
Heffernan would be the next to make a qualifying ride, however he only managed 88 points placing him second behind Triplett with 175.5 points. Then it came down to the final two, Mason and Richardson. Mason took the lead from Triplett when he became the first rider to cover his three bulls leaving the pressure to Richardson who was the last to ride and his biggest threat.
Richardson’s bull draft pick, Storm Boy made quick work of him handing Mason his second win in consecutive weekends and making him a true contender for the upcoming Australian Title.
Launched back in 2008, the Professional Bull Riders Tamworth Invitational Cup Series event has gone from strength to strength each and every year since its inception on the Australian Tour and on Saturday night it was again a sellout at the AELEC on Saturday.
