He was worried but let the four-year mare work her way back to the tail of the field and save her for one last rush home.
The daughter of Rollon Bigred did the rest, swooping on race leader Our Orville for a neck win in the 1980m Coates Hire Pace.
“I was worried,” Welsh admitted.
“She didn’t want to go up. But I saved her for a crack at them.”
It was his fifth race win as a driver, the teenager also notching his second win with the mare trained by his father, Dwayne Brown.
“We had this trouble with her last prep too.
“But she can run when she puts her mind on the job.
“It’s getting her to switch on sometimes.
“She’s always a heart in your mouth thing.”
Brown said she would race again at the next Tamworth meeting on October 12.
Tamworth Harness Racing Club chairman Terry Browne was delighted with Monday’s meeting, highlighted by a treble for Queensland trainer Shaun Gillespie and young junior driver Brittany Graham.
They combined to win with Sevaerg, Shootforthestarzzz and Tosca Jack.
That also included winning the feature race, the $7500 BMR Quarries Dash For Cash (1230m).
“Unfortunately our sponsors couldn’t be here today,” Browne said of the local BMR Quarries.
“They have just won a big contract up in Queensland.
“Brian Crough (owner) is up there in Ipswich.
“The winners of this race are from up there too.”
Gillespie trains at Prenzlau which is halfway between Ipswich and Brisbane on the Warrego Highway.
He celebrated just his second appearance at Tamworth Paceway with his first treble and will be back for the rich Golden Guitar Carnival in January.
A big country music fan, he’s always wanted to attend the festival and will kill two birds with one pacing stone in the new year.
Shootforthestarzzz, he said, would head back to Albion Park for a metro mares race.
Monday’s Dash For Cash win was her 11th in 52 starts.
