The overall Tidy Towns title for 2014 went to Sheffield in Tasmania, but the local village has reason to be proud, being awarded the Community Action and Partnerships Award and receiving a highly commended honour for Heritage and Culture.
Keep Australia Beautiful national chief executive officer Peter McLean said the town’s Easter festival was a major factor in the partnerships award win.
“This beautiful town thrives on volunteering and partnerships with their stakeholders,” he said.
“The Go for Gold Festival is a notable achievement for such a small town.”
National Tidy Towns judge Dick Olesinski, who’s in his 20th year of judging, said Nundle’s commitment to its history was second to none.
“Maintaining Nundle’s proud heritage is important to residents, and in particular, the very active Nundle History and Heritage Research Committee,” he said.
“Their work on digitising records, transcribing interviews, as well as collecting newspaper articles and photographs of historical interest is outstanding.”
Nundle Tidy Towns committee chairman Claire Lennon and Tamworth Regional Council mayor Col Murray were among the local delegation on hand to collect the awards.
2014 marks 46 years of the Tidy Towns Awards in Australia, with Keep Australia Beautiful receiving 1300 initiatives nationally, from more than 360 entrants across councils, shires, community groups, schools and individuals.
