Students used the day to thank firefighters for their efforts in protecting them after fires around Moonbi, as well as the rest of the state.
National Red Balloon Day came from a Victorian initiative to thank firefighters, and Moonbi students have followed the fires in Coonabarabran and the Blue Mountains, as well as locally.
Sales from the official red balloons go to fire organisations in each state.
The students at Moonbi had a visit from the Kootingal-Moonbi Rural Fire Service and they were delighted to thank their volunteer firefighters.
Principal Bonita Broughton said many of the students’ parents were in the RFS, so the students knew about the fires and the work that the volunteers did.
“It’s just our way of saying thank you and recognising the great work the RFS does in our local community,” she said.
“We’ve had conversations about the fires in Coonabarabran and Sydney and because we’ve had such a bad fire season, we wanted to thank them. We really appreciate their efforts.”
The balloons were released into the sky to mark the last official day of summer – and hopefully, the worst of the fire season.
