Five RAAF Hawk 127 lead-in fighters from Number 76 Squadron at the RAAF Base Williamtown, near Newcastle, will train in Tamworth until March 14.
There will be 50 personnel involved in initial fighter course training at the Tamworth Regional Airport, with all personnel staying in the city for the month.
The detachment commander of 76 Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Timothy Twelvetree, said the course was normally run from the RAAF Base Williamtown, but its runway was being worked on, so the training was moved to Tamworth, so trainee fighter pilots and weapon system officers could continue the course.
It will also be a boost for students at the Australian Defence Force Basic Flying Training School.
“While we are at Tamworth we will be spending time with pilots on course at the Basic Flight Training School, in the hope that, by seeing the jets in action, this will motivate them to join the air combat fraternity,” Flight Lieutenant Twelvetree said.
The personnel will return to Williamtown on Friday, March 14.
Residents are warned of increased aircraft noise during the exercise.
