The UNE Council voted to renew Professor Barber’s contract this week and agreed to the increase in his remuneration package, which remains within university sector benchmarks.
Last year Professor Barber’s salary was $585,000, which put his pay at 29th out of 37 vice-chancellors’ in the nation.
His term at the university began in February 2010 and his re-signing of the contract will take him to 2019.
“We have, in the vice-chancellor, an outstanding leader with an extraordinary vision and understanding of how the higher education sector is changing in the new globally competitive environment,” out-going chancellor Richard Torbay said.
Mr Torbay said Professor Barber had identified the need for UNE to invest in online education and become more competitive, which was key to the university’s success.
