To mark the anniversary of his death, a group of 24 police officers from the Tuggerah Lakes area will set off on February 25 in an attempt to walk to Tamworth Police Station by Saturday March 2.
It is hoped by the time they reach the city, more than 90 walkers will be involved.
The “our mates, our families walk” is a fundraiser for Mr Rixon’s widow Fiona and children as well as police legacy.
The officers will be walking through six Local Area Commands including Lake Macquarie, North Region Headquarters , Newcastle City, Port Stephens, Central Hunter, and the Hunter Valley.
Along the way they will be joined by fellow officers – a walk they say is similar to the World War 1 Cooee recruitment march in 1915.
Tuggerah Lakes Commander Superintendent David Swilks said the walk was to publically show the level of support in the police force, for each other and their families.
“Essentially we are one big family and when we lose one of our own, not only does the officer’s family grieve, but we all grieve,” he said.
Senior Constable Rixon died after he was shot while performing a routine traffic stop on Lorraine St, Tamworth on March 2.
