The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has warned thunderstorms are likely to develop in the afternoon and persist into the night.
Tamworth has been considered a red area, meaning it is more than likely that thunderstorms will occur.
Gunnedah have also been listed in the red area and can expect to see similar conditions.
BOM meteorologist Hugh McDowell said locals could expect to see damaging winds up to 120 kilometres per hour.
"It's enough to bring down large branches on trees and might lift up pieces of garden furniture that isn't tied down," he said.

Although damaging winds would be the greatest risk, Mr McDowell said large hail stones and rain cannot be ruled out.
"Hail's a possibility and so is heavy rain," he said.
The mercury is set to hit a high of 29 on Friday, with conditions expected to ease across the weekend.
Saturday could bring with it a slight chance of a shower, most likely in the early morning and a high of 27 degrees.
It's expected to be partly cloudy on Sunday with a limited chance of rain.
