Two police have been hospitalised after they were allegedly attacked from behind while surrounded by a group after a routine vehicle stop in West Tamworth on Friday night.
A 19-year-old man was arrested and will face court today on charged with assaulting the two officers during the arrest.
Oxley police officers stopped a Holden Commodore on Sue Crescent at about 8.20pm on Friday night in West Tamworth for a random breath test.
The 19-year-old female driver was subjected to a roadside breath test and returned a negative result.
Officers also spoke to a 19-year-old man, who was in the back seat of the car.
The man allegedly refused to give police his details before getting out of the car and running from the officers.
A 25-year-old male constable, and a female senior constable, aged 42, stopped the man a short distance away and a struggle ensued, police allege.
Police claim that while they were arresting the man, officers were surrounded by a group of bystanders and were repeatedly hit from behind.
Both police were taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for treatment for injuries they suffered in the alleged assault. The female officer dislocated her right shoulder during the incident, while the male officer was treated for a suspected broken hand.
The 19-year-old man was charged with giving a false name to a police officer, two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty and causing actual bodily harm, and resisting an officer in the execution of their duty.
He was refused bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court on Saturday.
The 19-year-old woman was served a future court attendance notice for driving without ever getting a licence, a first offence. She is due to appear before Tamworth Local Court on September 13.
