Current health advice remains that AstraZeneca is preferred for people over the age of 60 years only, but locals aged between 18 and 39 can now consult with their GPs and book an appointment if they choose.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the announcement on Monday night, and Tamworth's Northwest Health GP Dr Ian Kamerman said he could see why.
"We now have community transmission of the Delta variant in Australia," he said.
"As many people as possible need to be vaccinated as soon as possible."

Dr Kamerman said the practice had seen demand from younger people wanting to be vaccinated.
He said the practice was working out logistics - including adding appointment slots - and would be accepting bookings online from eligible younger people.
There are dozens of practices across the region with AstraZeneca supplies, and he urged locals to contact their regular GP first.
Dr Kamerman said doctors at vaccination appointments consult with patients about potential risks. People have been reminded it's the access that has changed, not the health advice.
Those aged over 60 are eligible for AstraZeneca at GPs or the hospital; while people aged between 40 and 59 are eligible to have Pfizer at the hospital.
Vials of the Pfizer vaccine are expected to be delivered to Tamworth GPs in the coming weeks.
