Houses in Calala, East and South Tamworth, along with Oxley Vale were hit by offenders late on Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday morning.

Police said intruders forced their way into some of the homes, or entered through unlocked doors and windows, stealing cars, cash and other goods.

In one Calala break-in, a woman hid in a bedroom and used a phone to call police while the offenders were still inside.

"If something doesn't sound right, or there are people in the street late at night, especially young people, please call police, don't think it's trivial," Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said.

"Police have access to CCTV from across town that we can monitor live."

Police were still searching for a Subaru Outlander and a Toyota Hilux on Friday after two other stolen cars were recovered.

"We have seen quick cash, valuables, car keys, those sorts of things stolen, and we have recovered two of the cars," Detective Darcy said.

"These offenders are mobile, they're using cars to get around, criss-crossing town."

Police said most of the break-ins have occurred when residents have gone to bed for the night, or the lights have gone out.

"If residents hear dogs barking, or people whistling, remain vigilant, keep a look out and call police, and keep an eye on your property and that of your neighbours for anybody that might be around," Detective Darcy said.

"Police can come and make patrols, in some cases they might be around the corner already patrolling.

"Operation Southbreak has several crews working around the clock, and through the night, and they will continue throughout the weekend, rain, hail or shine."
