Ms McDonald is playing Donna Sheridan, the leading lady in Mamma Mia! the musical, which will open at the Capitol Theatre on Friday night.
"She is quite funny and she's quite neurotic I think, she always has to be doing something, she can't stop and sometimes I relate to it a bit," she said.

"I think also she has this pain of lost love, so you see this whole journey of her with her daughter and her friends and the past, which is still haunting her, but it all resolves in the end, which is good."
Preparing to take the stage has been a rollercoaster ride for the cast, with the show originally cancelled due to COVID-19. But, with the curtain ready to be raised, the excitement is kicking in.
"It's been really good to actually get to the set and have the lights and the costumes and everything ... we were still hesitant as to whether it would actually go ahead or not," Ms McDonald said.
Although only lip-syncing and seated bopping is allowed under the venue's COVID rules, patrons can expect to hear renditions of hits like Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Waterloo and Our Last Summer as part of the production.
"I love all their songs and I can't even say that I have a favourite," Ms McDonald said.
Mamma Mia! tickets are available online.
