Masks are now mandatory at all airports in the state as part of a state government public health order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In Tamworth, Hunter New England Health (HNEH) staff have worked diligently to screen passengers who arrive on flights from Brisbane.

The district's COVID-19 medical controller Paul Craven said both passengers who were local to Queensland and returning New England North West residents have been screened.

"We screen for what areas people come from, temperatures and symptoms and at the weekend we had advised people to stay isolated," he said.

"We're just waiting to hear from the Premier and the public health officer to see if there are further announcements for NSW, but at the moment we continue to screen on a daily basis.

"We have had no-one with symptoms, signs or fevers and everyone has been extremely compliant.

"We would like to say thank you to the public for being compliant and we are very grateful - but people should continue to remain vigilant and if you are sick please get tested."

Screening continues at Newcastle, Tamworth and Armidale airports.

Meanwhile, the public health order is being enforced locally, Tamworth Regional Council airport and aviation commercial director John Sommerlad said.

"Both visitors and passengers who enter the terminal building will be required to wear a mask," he said.

"Those people who do not have one on arrival will be able to access one from outside the terminal building.

"People are encouraged to bring their own masks."

Masks must be worn on domestic flights and $200 fines can be issued for non-compliance.
