The visits by family with restrictions had only resumed one month ago, after being off the agenda since March.
Corrective Services NSW moved to call a halt as the state's number of active cases spiralled at the weekend, the majority of which were linked to the Avalon cluster.
"In response to an increase in COVID-19 cases within the Sydney metropolitan area and based on advice from NSW Health, Corrective Services NSW has taken the decision to suspend in-person visits," a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said.

"This decision was not made lightly.
"The safety and security of our staff, inmates, visitors and the community remain our top priority.
"Video visits will continue to be available for family and friends to ensure contact is maintained.
"We continue to monitor the situation and rely on the advice of NSW Health.
"In-person visits will resume as soon as it is safe to do so."
